The beautiful clear waters of the islands make this sport a winner. Locate a guide with a boat and equipment who will take you out into the ocean and assist you with the wondrous water excursion. The seven main islands of this state offer many unique diving opportunities but Oahu is probably the best and safest for the beginning diver. Try your first excursion with a master guide to see how much you enjoy this underwater experience. If you are on an extended stay, you can work with an instructor from the Hawaii School of Diving and become a certified diver in only three days.
Riding the waves can be the thrill of a lifetime. Take your board to designated areas on the islands of Oahu (especially on Waikiki Beach,) Kauai, Hawaii (the Big Island), and Maui. If you are a beginner, sign up for lessons and rent a board on a beach with less aggressive waves and learn the etiquette, rules and positioning for this exciting and competitive sport. New surfing locations have been added around the islands for the more experienced and adventurous surfer, but some of the classic locations such as the North Shore of Oahu have the biggest waves and the most history. Watch for one of the many competitions at these beaches. If you cannot ride the waves yourself, it is also a great spectator sports as the professionals show the captivated audiences how it is done.
